Converting a Steel Trawler Into a Sailing Ship. The journey has just started!

----------
Although we are finally ready to move our historic trawler, it is still a long way to go before we are done with the refit project.
Our steel ship still needs some structural repairs, has no running water or electricity and no interior at the moment.
However, the first step is done. We can finally untie the lines and move to another harbor.
And we really enjoyed the first journey on Flying Coney!
Flying Coney is an 82ft long historic steel ship. And we bring her back to live as the beautiful sailing ship she once was. When we are done with the refit we want to sail the ocean together with you and teach traditional sailing skills.

These are the "Officers" at the beginning of the credits. But since we're grateful for every Patron we have we also mention the entry level Patrons in every video. But we see that as an additional benefit for them and the readability depends on how long the outro is.

    Hi Guys, nice to see flying coney sail. the issue with the cooling water might be caused by air in the system. the air bubble can be caught when there has been given a reverse . likely when you entered the dock and gave reverse. that often happens when the ship is high in the water when not loaded. you can check this by trying in open water where there is room enough. it depends also where the cool water inlet is . good luck and safe sails.

      We manually place an add about every 5min and that's far less than what UA-cam would put in automatically. We do so since very much the beginning of the channel. Even though our add revenue is getting lower and lower even with more views. We personally pay for YT Premium because it's part of being a creator to watch other channels. But I can understand that UA-cam has become difficult to watch and we're also noticing that it's far more difficult to grow on this platform.

    • @FlyingConey

      Yes indeed the engine did run perfect. Either it was a minor issue or we're a bit overly concerned. So it could very well be that there was no issue at all. In the past weeks we made a lot of progress on Flying Coney and on the wooden boat as well. Not long until we will leave Sneek again and go to Urk. • @FlyingConey
      @FlyingConey 7 днів тому

      I can understand that and a UA-cam channel needs viewers, needs comments and needs likes. Not everyone can become a Patron. We see Patreon as a platform where we can share additional content and not only as a way to receive donations. We've formed a group who attend our crew meetings and we can discuss the next steps in our project and answer all questions. Interestingly only a few of our Patrons actually watch the additional contend. But of course we're graceful for every Patron. So it might be an idea to use the 7 day free trails for the 23 channels and have a look how you like the Platform and where you get something back for your money.

    So what as the distance of this sea trial? Perhaps a scale on the map to help us non-europeans make sense of the map?! Just a suggestion. Also, re. your cooling problem at the start, check your thermostats, and have some spare ones on hand. They can fail easily (I know!).

    • @FlyingConey
      @FlyingConey 8 днів тому

      The distance in between Lelystad and Lemmer is about 30 nautical miles. At the moment we are overly cautious and keep a close eye on our systems. For us the ice cold return line from the keel cooling was a bit unusual. But it's possible that it's always like that. With the smoke detector going off it was a high stress situation but that was also only because a bit of oil and dirt fumed a little bit and we had the engine room doors closed for the first time since we had the smoke detector. So overall nothing to worry about.

    Is it possible to fit a sail to the existing rigging? As you show at 10:10. Or better yet, a sail forward as well? I'll suggest that it would be an enhancement to your YT content. Managing just one sail imparts the sense that one day Flying Coney will be a sailing ship. Plus it gives a sense of what goes on when you are sailing. I'm certain there are many people in the community who have never sailed. My suggestion is to design it in such a way that it can be used on the eventual full rigging - so there is no waste. Secondly, any propulsion you do get from the modest sail means less diesel consumed, correct? So that's my suggestion for this episode. So happy to see you underway. <3

    • @FlyingConey
      @FlyingConey 8 днів тому

      We do have four sails for the existing rigging. At least two jibs and a gaff sail. However if we do want to use the existing rigging we would need to exchange all ropes, many blocks and also parts of the standing rigging. For an improvised motorsailer rig that's too much money and too much work. Just last week the gaff was crashing down when we hoisted the dinghy back on deck. I think that was a warning shot. So we're thinking of going one step backwards and get rid of the rig. That way Flying Coney will look at least like a nice trawler yacht and not like an odd motorsailer. BUT we will add masts as soon as possible. We will start with a fore and aft rig and will add square sails later on. The goal is to rig her as a schooner brig.

    • @stevejohnstonbaugh9171
      @stevejohnstonbaugh9171 8 днів тому

      @@FlyingConey Ah - too bad the existing rigging is not unstable. Thank you for explaining the circumstances. I can agree with your thinking about going one step backward. One less variable, one less possibility of sudden failure and everything that goes along with a failure of that sort and a reduction of her gross weight. I don't see any downside to that route. Thanks for the information! :) This subject may make interesting YT content.

    5:45” There is something very odd in those GPS coordinates… 1- date is 20 years old? 2- Maybe that’s why looks like you are ‘driving’ a tractor in the middle of a corn field, instead of steering Flying Coney on IJsselmeer…? Maybe you are using different datum than WGS84? 🤔

    • @FlyingConey

      @@FlyingConey Actually the GPS signal does not contain the full year, and the date information wraps around every 20 years or so (1024 weeks to be precise). Modern GPS receivers translate this into the correct date, but this very old model (a Furuno GP-30 if I'm not mistaken) cannot do that. Time and position information is still totally fine.

      There are so many interesting things coming up. We're making huge progress on Flying Coney. We film everything and will share it all, that's for sure!

    Brings back memories. We chartered a traditional Zeeuse Schouw from Heech by de Mar in Heeg and wandered around Friesland. We moored in the marina on the Sylroede west of the town and enjoyed good food and drink in Lemmer. Good fun.

      Sounds like a lovely journey of yours. For us it was the first time really arriving to a new town while underway and it really was special.
